Melbourne party troupe, Animals Dancing return with the label’s sixth disc, Psytube; a mind-melting trip from Lyon duo, The Pilotwings. The synth-heavy house pair, synonymous with the BFDM label channel their digi synth euphoria into trance not trance and acid atmospheres across a four track EP.From the subtle breaks and pan flute/acid combo of Trance En Aubrac, steady synth flutter of Future Glouglou to the full tilt restless psychedelia of Yakado and cinematic acid stepping Gig in the Ocean,The Pilotwings once again showcase their tongue in cheek nods to the past with production launching into the future.
‘Inner Tribe Records Remixed’ delivers 12 brand new remixes of notable cuts from the Inner Tribe Records catalogue. The album, released 8th April 2022, sees London UK producer Chris Read place his spin on a dozen songs from the label, with a list of featured artists which includes Detroit rap legend Phat Kat, long time Dilla collaborator Steve Spacek, Japan’s Mitsu the Beats, Ubiquity Records’ Ohmega Watts and late Oakland MC Zion-I among many others.Remixes of tracks by New York vocalist Tan Brown and Inner Tribe mainstays Planetself bring a contemporary Neo Soul flavour to the table, while reworks of cuts by a cast of rappers that includes John Robinson, Tokyo Dawn’s Stan Smith and Yarah Bravo ensure Hip Hop is well represented. Styles and influences merge throughout: Read’s remix for Dream Crews (Mitsu the Beats & Flow4dayz) effortlessly blends influences that include 80s Synth Boogie, contemporary Hip Hop and 90s R&B, while more uptempo reworks of tracks featuring Inner Tribe label boss Inkswel plus Colonel Red, Steve Spacek and Harvey Sutherland draw influence from London’s Broken Beat sound. Whatever the feel or tempo, Jazz is a unifying theme in this collection assembled by a producer whose work perfectly encapsulates the meeting point of Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop and the myriad contemporary sounds those genres spawned.
Motor City label Upstairs Asylum celebrates its roots in 313 with this new Dance Detroit EP featuring a wealth of American house innovators. First up, Reggie Dokes and Steve Crawford join forces on 'Fear Of Failure', a house track steeped in Detroit soul. Marvin Prather's 'Until' follows on with his stylish and soul-drenched grooves. Steve Crawford then goes it alone and turns up the drums on his potent 'Let You Go' (feat Tony B) and then get deeply emotional on 'Love Is Here' this time with help from featured artist Anthony Poteat. Prather and then label regular and Atlanta man Reggie Dokes closes down with his 'Not Ready.'
Angel Wash channels the visual inspiration of Shin'ya Tsukamoto’s ‘A Snake of June’ (and other turn of the millennium Japanese Cinema) into ominous DnB soundscapes across 5 tracks.Cavernous synth reflections & translucent textures meld intermittently with expertly chopped breaks, sharp, sinister lead synthesis & sub aquatic bass, drawing from an eerie, yet euphoric sonic palette.
