Devil Wears Paranda
Odd Gulabi is the new label from Leeds-based producer and DJ, mankeepitdeep. The first release on the label is his debut, Devil Wears Paranda, a four-track EP characterised by its echoing Panjabi vocals and deep, manipulated basslines.
Devil Wears Paranda is a nod to both his Panjabi and UK roots.
The artwork is done by mankeepitdeep’s brother, Kam&, an accomplished product designer, who designed the cover in response to listening to the EP.
The opener, “When Life Gives You Lemons Make Nimbu Paani” layers Panjabi samples with frenetic percussion. Sonic rhythms zoom in and out as manipulated bass pounds across the garage-influenced track. The deep, brooding soundscape on “Drinking A Cha Da Cup In This Temporal World,” glitters with echoed vocals sat on a
bed of sounds, resonating at eerie frequency.
The title track “Devil Wears Paranda” hosts a deep-space exploration of dub techno stabs, rhythmic drum patterns and driving sub bass. The closer, “Rubicon Pre Sugar Taxx” is perhaps the most conventionally rhythmic song on the EP. Hints of minimal percussion tick along the grainy background melody, inducing a head-nod before the
album fades out to a close.
Tracks like “When Life Gives You Lemons Make Nimbu Paani” have enjoyed support from the likes of Manara, Jyoty, Contours, while other tracks from the EP have been supported by DJs including Samrai, Medley P, Blackdown and more.
